Rustic Stone Retreat

Initial Issue

This project began with a backyard that had plenty of potential but was severely underutilized. The space was overgrown, cluttered with deteriorating features, and lacked any functional design. The homeowner wanted to reclaim their outdoor area, creating a structured and inviting landscape that would maximize usable space while remaining easy to maintain.

Design Phase

To address the challenges, we designed a multi-level backyard featuring a two-tiered retaining wall to enhance functionality and aesthetics. The lower level would serve as a cozy retreat with a fireplace alcove and seating area, while the upper level would be transformed into a lush, open grass space. Garden beds were integrated into the retaining walls, incorporating low-maintenance plants that add visual interest year-round. To ensure ease of upkeep, we implemented a comprehensive irrigation system for all plant beds and lawn areas. Additionally, we planned for built-in conduits to accommodate future wiring and water access, providing long-term convenience and flexibility.

Building Process

Execution of the project started with demolition and grading, carefully managing excavation around the well to avoid damaging underground pipes. The lower retaining wall, spanning 150 feet in length, was constructed to provide structural integrity and separation between the two levels. A central staircase was installed, allowing easy access to the elevated lawn area. Precision and durability were key factors in constructing the retaining walls, ensuring they could withstand the test of time.

Next, we laid out the fireplace alcove, ensuring a comfortable and inviting atmosphere for gatherings. The irrigation system was meticulously installed, delivering efficient watering to all areas while minimizing water waste. To complete the build, we introduced the selected low-maintenance plant varieties, which add beauty to the space without requiring excessive upkeep.

Completion & Final Outcome

After three weeks of construction, the transformation was complete. The once-overgrown and neglected backyard had become a functional, multi-tiered retreat that seamlessly blended aesthetics with usability. The upper-level lawn provided a perfect space for relaxation and activities, while the lower-level alcove with its integrated fireplace created an intimate gathering space. The strategically placed conduits ensured that the backyard remained adaptable to future needs, whether for additional lighting, entertainment systems, or water features.

This project showcases our ability to take challenging landscapes and turn them into beautiful, purposeful outdoor living spaces. With quality craftsmanship, innovative design, and thoughtful planning, we created a backyard that not only meets the client’s needs today but also provides long-term enjoyment for years to come.
