Initial Issue

This backyard renovation project addressed several fundamental issues stemming from improper initial landscaping. Without landscape fabric, weeds had overtaken the entire yard, leading to excessive maintenance requirements. Additionally, the space was vastly underutilized, leaving it as a wasted opportunity for outdoor enjoyment.

Design Phase

To reclaim the backyard and turn it into a functional and inviting space, we decided on a full sod installation across the entire yard, ensuring a lush and usable green space. To define the property’s edge and add a natural privacy barrier, we installed a row of boxwoods, which will mature into a dense hedge to separate the yard from neighboring homes. This design provided both structure and long-term ease of maintenance while maximizing the backyard’s potential.

Building Process

Executing the plan came with its challenges, particularly due to difficult access to the backyard. To facilitate material transport, we constructed a temporary ramp. The next step involved the removal of all existing weeds, rocks, and debris, clearing the space for a fresh start.

The foundation of the yard consisted of solid rock, requiring the installation of 12 yards of premium soil to support healthy grass growth. Careful grading ensured proper drainage to prevent future water pooling issues. For the boxwoods, we dug trenches and tapped into the existing irrigation system, ensuring long-term plant health. Finally, we installed landscape edging and sod, followed by a top-up of decorative rock around the grass to create a clean and polished look.

Completion & Final Outcome

After 4days of work, the backyard was completely transformed. The once-neglected space is now a vibrant, green oasis, providing a low-maintenance yet functional outdoor area. The newly installed sod offers a lush, open space perfect for leisure and activities, while the boxwood hedge enhances privacy and elegance. With a solid foundation, proper drainage, and efficient irrigation, this backyard will remain healthy and beautiful for years to come.
