Project Overview

Initial Issue

This project began with overgrown juniper bushes dominating the existing garden beds. Not only did these plants require excessive maintenance, but they also obstructed the view and caused structural issues by growing between fences and damaging foundations. The homeowners wanted a solution that would enhance aesthetics while ensuring ease of upkeep.

Design Phase

To address the challenges, we designed two low-maintenance garden beds featuring decorative plants that provide visual appeal without obstructing the view. For the primary bed, we selected smoke bushes in two color varieties, creating a striking contrast and adding seasonal interest. In the second bed, we planted lavender for its fragrance and height variation, complemented by ground-cover thyme to fill in gaps and minimize soil erosion. This combination created a dynamic yet manageable landscape.

Building Process

The project required grading both beds to ensure proper installation and water management. We installed a pressure-treated wood edging along the view-facing side to define the space. To support plant health, we tapped into the existing irrigation system, ensuring that all new plantings received adequate water.

Next, we carefully installed smoke bushes, lavender, and thyme, positioning them for optimal growth and aesthetic impact. To further suppress weed growth and improve soil stability, we laid down landscape fabric, using a textured fabric on sloped areas to prevent shifting. Finally, we completed the design with the installation of 1" Brown Sugar Stone, providing a rich contrast to the vibrant plants while maintaining a polished and elegant appearance.

Completion & Final Outcome

With the junipers removed and the new beds in place, the transformation was immediate. The redesigned space is now low-maintenance, visually appealing, and structurally sound. The smoke bushes provide a bold color contrast, while the lavender and thyme enhance texture, fragrance, and ground coverage. The addition of Brown Sugar Stone ensures a finished look that will remain pristine with minimal upkeep.

This project highlights our expertise in strategic plant selection, efficient irrigation integration, and aesthetic landscaping solutions. By replacing high-maintenance junipers with a thoughtful, well-designed garden bed, we created a stunning, functional, and enduring outdoor space that enhances both beauty and practicality.
